The Beginners Sewing Course is ideal if you are new to using a sewing machine or haven't used one in a while.
We will teach you how to operate a sewing machine with many insights that will make your sewing life pain-free in the long run.
The curriculum encompasses a deep dive into sewing machine techniques, overlockers
pressing techniques, and more to embark on your simple projects independently.
By the course's conclusion, you'll possess intermediate skills in using the sewing machine, sewing skills and a good understanding of professional garment construction.
THE BEGINNER SEWING COURSE WILL TEACH YOU:
- How to use your sewing machine - the mechanical functionality and how to match the capability of your machine to your fabric's requirements.
- How to use the overlocker.
- How to create a perfect sewing stitch and troubleshooting.
- About sewing threads, needle sizes, and function of commonly used sewing feet
-Seams commonly used for garment making - basic seams, topstitched, French, piped, hem, etc.
- How to cut bias binding from scratch and sew a bound edge & roleau loops
- How to insert a regular zip in a trouser fly front
- How to sew an invisible zip concealed zip.
- Interlinings - insight into the construction of a good quality garment and how
interlinings are used
- A range of pockets from basic to advanced – these exercises encompass a myriad of sewing skills designed to excel your sewing skills!
We will provide each student with a sewing space with the relevant sewing tools and haberdashery.
All handouts will be provided along with sewing patterns to cut and practice at home.
There will be access to an overlocker and semi-industrial press.
We encourage you to bring your own fully serviced sewing machine. If you do not have a sewing machine, we can provide it although it’s no ideal. It’s important that students become fully acquainted with their own machines so they can practice effectively.
Mastering the art of sewing and crafting garments to a professional standard requires both time and consistent practice. To maximize your learning experience in this course, we recommend dedicating time between sessions.
Students are required to bring:
- A sewing machine.
- Notebook/sketchbook to take detailed notes.
- Fabric scissors – (don’t worry if you don’t know which one to choose, we can help you)
- other course materials will be discussed throughout the course.
The group size is restricted to 4 students to allow for each student to receive individual support.
